DESTINATIONS • OUTER ISLANDS

The Vanuatu Most Charts Still Leave Blank

Beyond Efate, Santo and Tanna lie some eighty further islands, most without an airstrip, several without a name any guest will recognise, and precisely where a Vanuatu voyage becomes genuinely singular.

The Character

Vanuatu's outer islands, the Banks and Torres groups to the north, the Shepherds and Torba provinces, the volcanic chain running south toward Aneityum, represent the country at its most unmediated. Custom land ownership, minimal infrastructure and genuine geographic remoteness have preserved a version of Melanesian island life that has largely disappeared elsewhere in the Pacific.

These are not destinations that appear on a standard charter itinerary, and that is entirely the point. Access requires relationships, local knowledge and time, all three of which VYA has spent a lifetime building.

Mountains draped in green meet seas of crystal clarity. Vanuatu is where land and ocean embrace in perfect harmony.

Why It Matters to a Voyage

  • K
Genuinely uncrowded anchorages, many rarely visited by any vessel in a given season
  • K
Traditional villages, custom and cultural dances and practices found nowhere else in the Pacific
  • K
Untouched reef systems and blue-water fishing grounds well beyond commercial pressure
  • K
Access arranged directly through community and chiefly relationships, not standard tour operators

Nature and tradition meet in harmony across these islands.

What Sets the Tone

An outer-island itinerary is, by design, not for every voyage, it demands more planning, more flexibility, and a guest genuinely drawn to remoteness rather than convenience. For those who are, it delivers something almost impossible to find elsewhere in the Pacific: the sense of arriving somewhere entirely on its own terms.
