FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The Questions Worth Answering Properly
Twenty questions we are asked most often, answered the way we would in person.
What are Vanuatu's official ports of entry?
Port Vila (Efate), Luganville (Espiritu Santo), Lenakel (Tanna) and Sola (Vanua Lava). Port Vila is the primary port of entry and offers the most complete infrastructure for a first arrival.
How much advance notice does Vanuatu Customs require?
Advance notification is required at least 24 hours ahead of arrival, including crew, passenger and passage details. We recommend engaging our team as early as possible in your passage planning so documentation is complete well before you arrive, and visas are approved in time.
Can Vanuatu Yachts handle clearance at every port of entry?
Yes. We maintain direct relationships with Customs, Immigration, Biosecurity and Port authorities at all four official ports and coordinate clearance regardless of which you arrive through, declared and undeclared.
What biosecurity restrictions should we be aware of?
Vanuatu has very strict biosecurity regulations to protect our pristine environment, and diverse flora & fauna. Fresh meat, fruit, vegetables and live animals brought aboard are subject to biosecurity restrictions on arrival. We advise on regulations and provisioning ahead of arrival so nothing is held or declined at inwards clearance.
How far in advance should provisioning be arranged?
For standard orders, one to two weeks' notice ensures the best possible chance of availability. For specialist air freight imports, bespoke events or complex dietary programmes, we recommend engaging our provisioning team as early in your itinerary planning as possible.
Can you source French, Australian and New Zealand products locally?
Yes. Our provisioning network maintains standing relationships with importers across all three, alongside Vanuatu's own fresh seafood, produce and organic growers.
What is Vanuatu's cyclone season, and does it affect cruising?
Vanuatu's cyclone season runs broadly from November through April, with the optimal cruising window generally between May and October. We advise on seasonal planning as part of any itinerary discussion.
Is Vanuatu a good addition to a Fiji or New Caledonia season?
Very much so. Vanuatu sits within comfortable range of both and offers a genuinely different cruising character, many owners now treat it as the highlight of a wider South Pacific season rather than a standalone destination.
Do we need diving certification to dive the SS President Coolidge?
Open water certification allows access to the shallower sections of the wreck; deeper more complex dives require advanced or technical certification. We match your guests and crew with the appropriate local dive expert for their level.
Is Mount Yasur safe to visit?
Access is managed according to the volcano's alert level, set by local authorities, and ranges from crater-rim access in quieter phases to restricted distance during more active periods. We confirm current conditions before arranging any visit.
What currency is used in Vanuatu, and should we carry cash?
The Vanuatu Vatu is the local currency. Card payment is available in Port Vila and larger centres, though we recommend carrying local currency for outer-island provisioning, village visits and smaller transactions. VYA offers a fee-free CTM service, and as your agent will handle all major expenses on the vessel's behalf.
What languages are spoken in Vanuatu?
Bislama, English and French are Vanuatu's official languages, alongside more than one hundred distinct dialects across the archipelago. Our team operates fluently across all 3 official languages.
Can you arrange medical or dental care for guests or crew?
Yes. We coordinate medical and dental appointments in Port Vila and can arrange evacuation logistics where required, drawing on established relationships with local & international providers.
Is there reliable communications and internet access?
Port Vila and Luganville offer reliable mobile and internet coverage. Coverage becomes intermittent across the outer islands, which we factor into itinerary and communications planning where connectivity is a priority.
Can helicopters land across the islands, including the outer islands?
Landing options vary by island and require prior coordination with local authorities and landowners. We arrange helicopter permits, temporary import & duty exemption, charter coordination, and access to more remote outer-island locations, as part of our aviation and concierge coordination.
What should guests know before visiting a custom village?
Access to custom land is a matter of relationship and invitation, not a standard tourist offering. We arrange visits only where genuinely welcomed by the community, and brief guests beforehand on appropriate custom and etiquette.
Are pets permitted aboard vessels visiting Vanuatu?
Vanuatu maintains strict biosecurity requirements for live animals. We recommend 3 months notice and can advise on documentation and requirements well ahead of arrival for any vessel travelling with pets aboard.
What are Vanuatu's standard port dues and fees?
Port dues and standard government fees apply on arrival and departure and are managed by our team as part of the clearance process, with full transparency provided.
How experienced is your technical support network?
Our marine engineering and technical bench has supported vessels across a broad range of makes, systems and requirements for well over a decade, with established sourcing channels into Australia, New Zealand and the wider Pacific for specialist parts.
